During the walking tour with Gyuri of Beyond Budapest Sightseeing, we learnt more about the 1956 Revolution. The past weekend was a national celebration commemorating this day since 1989. Two hundred thousand Hungarians had fled the country to other countries such as the former Yugoslavia, Austria, France, US and UK. And Canada (Toronto) with 41,000 Hungarians immigrated to Cleveland.
A good thing to learn is that the Hungarian cultural traditions are preserved in the old Buckeye neighbourhood with the establishment of St. Elizabeth's church. And also the awareness of ethnic background among the American-born children of Hungarian immigrants.
I don't really know too much about the deep problems about this historical event. In the wikipedia, it states that it was a spontaneous nationawide revolt against the government of the People's Republic of Hungary and its Soviet-imposed policies, lasting from 23 Oct to 10 Nov 1956. Zsolt had his views written here. Still I find this a hard topic and it is difficult to comprehend.
