Hungarian Winter Farewell Carnival

Mohácsi Busójárás
Mohacs Hungarian Winter Farewell Carnival

There is a well-known carnival event in Hungary that starts six days prior to the Shrove Tuesday. It is a feast of six days that ends on Sunday. Its name is "Busójárás".

This is a special Spring greeting event - more like a traditional folk custom which originally was the local Croatian's own feast. They were the ''sokc'', the minority during the Turkish occupation.

To chase away the Turks, they wore frightening masks made of willow and sheep fur and constantly make lots of noise with flappers and instruments. This rite is believed that these men (also known as "busók") who were disguised in the animal hyde (the dressed skin) and fur were the ones who truly had chased away the invading Turks. So they parade by marching in front of thousands of spectators to chase away the winter with these devilish looking faces.

All these became a tourist attraction since it became a preserved tradition event. This nationwide and well-known event with several cultural activities, exhibition, concerts and folk music performances attracts up to 20,000 visitors every year.

This year, it will be held from the 3rd til 8th of March 2011.
