Budapest to Transylvania
The road trip from Budapest to Transylvania was about 10.5 hours in total. However, as we planned our sights over four days, we planned our itinerary in such a way that we get to see the historical sights as well as the traditional country side. Along the way, there were sights of these storks which are large, long-legged, long-necked wading birds with their nests and baby storks. Our first stop was to a historical province in the central of Transylvania.

There are several preparatory steps for a roadtrip to Transylvania. Besides checking on the routes and places we would like to see, the preparation includes the booking of the accommodation which at first posed some challenges.

It was difficult as the people did not respond to our emails. We suspected that they were not able to reply in English. So it had delayed our planning for about a week or two while we were waiting for their responses. Finally the way we solved it was by calling them directly asking if they speak English and asked if they are providing pet-friendly facilities as Momo (our pet Havanese dog) is traveling with us.

We managed to find hotel and villa accommodations that has parking facilities. The only setback was Internet access. Almost all of the three places we found were without WIFI access. The only way out was to pay for 3G and data roaming from our mobile phones.

We set off in the noon time and after driving for about 400 km (6 hours) from Budapest, we arrived at our first destination Cluj-Napoca, the 4th most populous city in Romania. This historical province of Transylvania is commonly known as Kolozsvár amongst the Hungarian people.

Coinciding with the summer season, there was an ice-cream festival going on at the square. We caught sight of the sunset and twilight at the city square and had a nice dinner at a Cafe bistro alfesco style. The waitress there speaks Hungarian too.

The next day we set off to visit a bath region of Transylvania where we get to taste the most delicious Transylvanian Székely Marhapörkölt Nokedlivel.

Budapest to Strasbourg
From Budapest to France, we planned our trip by TGV trains to arrive at Gare de Strasbourg.
By the EuroNight train, EN 462/EN 463, Kálmán Imre, we headed to Strasbourg from Budapest Keleti pu. (the Eastern Railway Station). The journey starts from Györ – Mosonmagyarovar - Bruck/Leitha - Wien Meidling - Wien Hütteldorf – St. Pölten – Linz – Wels - Attnag-Puchheim - Salzburg Hbf – München Hbf Germany.
We were left with 14 minutes to get onto the TGV trains. What we had on hand were not tickets because in Budapest, they were unable to issue the tickets. We had to think of the alternative route if we will missed the TGV train within that time scheduled. This was the risky part of our journey but fortunately everything worked out.
A TGV was right in front of us. We asked the ticket controller if we could board this TGV train inorder to get to Strasbourg on time, the young ticket controller said 'yes'.
Reservations were made for some of the seats and it was common to see even the seats indicated the names with small slips of paper. Feeling uneasy as we were, we checked for seats that were not with these reserved slips.
TGV is the French abbreviation for Train à Grande Vitesse, which means high-speed train. It is operated by SNCF voyages which is the French national rail operator. We took the second class and it has sockets for you to connect your portable computer.

Having tried it for the first time, we personally feel that it is more than amazing. The TGV serves so many cities and towns in France and running at such a world speed record of 574.8 km/h! Imagine traveling from Munich to Strasbourg is only 3.5 hours.
We are considering future travels to London, Brussels, Zurich, Torino in this manner just because it so much more comfortable than the air plane.

To go to the other cities by TGV is certainly a breeze.
Here are some other interesting destinations from Budapest if you are considering to make use of it as the base city.

From Budapest to Strasbourg
From Budapest to Madrid, Spain
The Malev and Wizz Air are the two major airlines that flies to Madrid, Spain. From Budapest (BUD) to Madrid (MAD), is just a short flight of 3 hours 20 minutes non-stop. So we flew to Madrid.
One of the must-see we must recommend here in the BudapestZIN is the Royal Palace. It is the largest royal palace in Western Europe. You must also see the Puerta del Sol, the best known square. Today there will be demonstrators there, you probably cannot see its wide area like before.
Plaza Mayor, Templo de Debod, Madrid Cathedral, Plaza de la Villa, Torre de Lujanes, Casa de Cisneros and Casa de la Villa.
One of Madrid icon is the old city gate called Puerta de Alcala. You should not miss Madrid's famous street, Gran Via.
I like the Plaza de Cibeles, it is a central square where Real Madrid celebrates championship wins and home to the Bank of Spain. Lots of squares in Madrid including the Plaza de Oriente which is right in front of the Royal Palace.
When in Spain, do what the Spanish do :) Watch a flamenco dance, see a bullfight, watch how the Real Madrid play in the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. These are some unique experiences to bring home.
Botin is the world's oldest restaurant where you can eat your heart's out (Botin is recorded in the world's Guinness Book of Records).
What to eat? Of course, tapas, it is the quintessential Spanish food. For snacks, you must check out the chocolate con churros.
If you like panoramic views of the capital's best sights, take a cable car right.

Our favourite is the romantic walk in the Retiro Park where there is a boating lake, rose-garden and large brassicas garden.

Flea market goers, you don't want to miss the Rastro.

Café New York
Commissioned by the New York Insurance Company New York Palace was built according to the plans of Alajos Hauszmann, Flóris Korb and Kálmán Giergl.
Sándor Steuer a member of a famous coffee-family opened the gem of the building the “most beautiful café in the world” on October 23, 1894.
The ground floor café became the most splendid part of the imposing palace beside its windows with 16 devilish fauns – “El Ashmodai” the ancient figure of coffee and meditation – held the lantern in good style propagating the spirituality of New York Café this way too.
The majestic building was built in eclectic style relying on Italian renaissance and baroque; its lavishly furnished interiors were designed in the spirit of historical eclecticism. Everything being made of marble, bronze, silk and velvet many people compared the building to the palace of the Bavarian King Louis II. The ceiling was decorated with the marvellous panel paintings of Gusztáv Mannheimer and Ferenc Eisenhut at the entrance a fountain, in the halls Venetian chandeliers dazzled visitors. In the Café beside the women’s and gambling room in the “deepwater” a billiard-room also found a place. According to the Pest rumour on the opening day a famous writer Ferenc Molnár together with his journalist friends threw the keys of the Café into the Danube to have it open 24 hours a day.
The Café gained its literary rank when the Harsányi brothers took over management. The New York from the first decade of the twentieth century became renowned as a real literary café one of the centre of the intellectual life of Budapest. Writers and journalists had their Home Circle here and soon the artists’ tables were formed. Shortly after, the editorial office of the highest standard literary periodical of the age “Nyugat” (“West”) found its home here, too. Gyula Krúdy, Ferenc Molnár, Zsigmond Móricz, Dezső Kosztolányi created their first writings here. From the 1910s the cream of the theatrical and movie world swarmed here: Indeed, this is where Sir Alexander Korda – director of films such as The Private Life of Henry VIII & The Thief of Baghdad – started out for his world award winning career, just as Michael Curtis, Oscar winning director of Casablanca did too. Pongrác Kacsó found inspiration in the atmosphere of the Café to compose his famous opera John the Hero as did Imre Kálmán the famous operetta composer when creating several of his celebrated pieces whilst seated in the New York. The New York was a music café: from the beginning gypsy music was to be heard with brass music in wintertime. An abundance of legendary personal waiters took care of the guests, each knowing intimately the regular guests’ wishes and habits.
The First World War put an end to the first golden age of the Café and the Harsányi brothers transferred management. After the war, Vilmos Tarján took over the Café opening a new chapter in its history. He formed a warm food kitchen, the “deepwater” was replaced by a restaurant and “New York Café – and Restaurant” became one of the most elegant restaurants of the city and once again the centre of social life. After the threat of the world war and with the 1930s’ economic crisis the vivid social life calmed everywhere in Europe so New York Café temporarily closed its doors and operated as the most beautiful warehouse in the world. It was reopened under the name of Hungária in 1954 although not as a Café but almost in its original splendour.
After initially sizing up of the project, In February 2001 the Italian Boscolo Group undertook the reconstruction of the legendary building. Experts of the State Monument Reconstruction and Restoration Centre prepared the plans of the monument controlled by the Boscolo Group’s own project management company Hotels Engineering. Following research and during the restoration, art monuments not known before were found. As a consequence, the new owners decided to open the Café together with the renewed Palace. From Spring 2006 the New York Café welcomes its guests in all it’s former splendour recalling the milieu of the beginning of the 20th century with an additional more modern design touch.
